【摘要】:TheUNSprovidesameansofcorrelatingmanynationallyusednumberingsystemscurrentlyadministeredbysocieties,tradeassociations,andindividualusersandproducersofmetalsandalloys,therebyavoidingconfusioncausedbyuseofmorethanoneidentificationnumberforthesamematerial;andbytheoppositesituationofhavingthesamenumberassignedtotwoormoreentirelydifferentmaterials.Italsoprovidestheuniformitynecessaryforefficientindexing,recordkeeping,datastorageandretrieval,andcrossreferencing.AUNSnumberisnotinitselfaspecification,sinceitestablishesnorequirementsforform,condition,quality,etc.Itisaunifiedidentificationofmetalsandalloysforwhichcontrollinglimitshavebeenestablishedinspecificationspublishedelsewhere.Note58212;OrganizationsthatissuespecificationsshouldreporttoappropriateUNSnumber-assigningoffices(3.1.2)anyspecificationchangesthataffectdescriptionsshowninpublishedUNSlistings.1.1Thispractice(Note1)coversaunifiednumberingsystem(UNS)formetalsandalloysthathavea"commercialstanding"(seeNote2),andcoverstheprocedurebywhichsuchnumbersareassigned.Section2describesthesystemofalphanumericdesignationsor"numbers"establishedforeachfamilyofmetalsandalloys.Sectionoutlinestheorganizationestablishedforadministeringthesystem.Section3describestheprocedureforrequestingnumberassignmenttometalsandalloysforwhichUNSnumbershavenotpreviouslybeenassigned.Note1UNSdesignationsarenottobeusedformetalsandalloysthatarenotregisteredunderthesystemdescribedherein,orforanymetaloralloywhosecompositiondiffersfromthoseregistered.Note2Theterms"commercialstanding,""productionusage,"andothersimilartermsareintendedtoapplytometalsandalloysinactivecommercialproductionanduse,althoughtheactualamountofsuchusewilldepend,amongotherthings,uponthetypeofmetalsandalloysinvolvedandtheirapplication.ThevariousstandardizingorganizationsinvolvedwiththeindividualindustriesapplytheirownestablishedcriteriatodefinethestatusofametaloralloyintermsofwhenaUNSdesignationnumberwillbeassigned.Forinstance,ASTMCommitteeA01requiresdetailsofheatanalysis,mechanicalproperties,andprocessingrequirementsforadditionofanewgradeoralloytoitsspecifications.TheCopperDevelopmentAssociationrequiresthatthematerialbe"incommercialuse(withouttonnagelimits);"theAluminumAssociationrequiresthatthealloybe"offeredforsale(notnecessarilyincommercialuse);"theSAEAerospaceMaterialsDivisioncallsfor"repetitiveprocurementbyatleasttwousers."Thus,whilenouniversaldefinitionforusagecriteriaisestablished,theUNSnumbersareintendedtoidentifymetalsandalloysthataregenerallyinregularproductionanduse.AUNSnumberwillnotordinarilybeissuedforamaterialthathasjustbeenconceivedorthatisstillinonlyexperimentaltrial.
